I noticed on the pictures in the CRL that the back slits start lower than the front. That is, the front slits open up higher (closer to the shoulder) than the back ones.

But the text doesn't specify. Can the front and back seams be "even"?

The Back section would be sewn down to your elbow level whereas the front of the robes would be at the underarm level.
